Program Overview

Sunrise Health GME Consortium · MountainView Hospital · Las Vegas, Nevada

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at MountainView Hospital is a three-year categorical program recruiting 21 PGY-1 categorical residents each academic year. The program holds ACGME accreditation with 10-year continuing accreditation status since September 2018.

All applications from prospective allopathic and osteopathic residents must be submitted through the ERAS system. The program is part of the Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium and welcomes international medical graduates. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Residents rotate through MountainView Hospital as the primary teaching site, as well as the VA Southern Nevada Health Care System, gaining broad exposure to inpatient medicine, geriatrics, addiction medicine, and hematology-oncology.

A robust 3+1 format providing comprehensive training in inpatient, outpatient, and subspecialty medicine

Core Educational Features

  • Our program utilizes a 3+1 schedule system to assign residents 3 weeks of rotation across variable settings including inpatient medicine wards, night float and other subspecialty rotations followed by one week of ambulatory care in the continuity clinic. Residents are also assigned 4 weeks of ICU each post graduate year and 4 weeks of Emergency Medicine in the senior year.There is no 24-hour call, as we feature a dedicated Night Float rotation.
  • To fulfill our mission of training high quality internists and to further expand the clinical learning and experience for the residents, our program offers a good mixture of inpatient and outpatient electives.

The program also features the Ultrasim ultrasound machine learning & training simulator for self-directed POCUS training, plus a dedicated POCUS elective.

  • Morning lectures on creative thinking, literature review, data gathering, IRB protocols
  • Biomedical statistics taught by the Division Director of Research
  • All residents required to complete a minimum of one scholarly activity and one QI project

How to Apply

All applications must be submitted through ERAS. The program participates in the NRMP Main Residency Match.

Eligibility Requirements

  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents (green card) only — visa sponsorship not available
  • USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1 must be passed before an interview offer can be extended
  • Step 2CK / COMLEX Level 2CE & 2PE must be completed prior to ranking
  • Prefer no more than 3 years since medical school graduation to anticipated residency start
  • Any gaps in education or work history must be explained
  • Must be eligible for a residency training license in the State of Nevada
  • Mandatory background check required for all applicants
  • International medical graduates welcome · ECFMG Status Report required with ERAS application
  • Osteopathic graduates accepted · USMLE not required for DO applicants

Is there a USMLE score cutoff?
The Program Director and faculty review all applications holistically — a decision to interview is based on multiple factors, not only USMLE scores.
Is there a graduation year cutoff?
The Program Director evaluates the applicant's overall skills and professional achievements. The decision to interview is based on several factors, not only medical school graduation year.
Are international medical graduates considered?
Yes. IMGs are considered. An ECFMG Status Report must be submitted with the ERAS application. An ECFMG Certificate is not required at the time of application.
Does the program accept visa applicants?
No. The program does not sponsor visas. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents (green card holders).
What research opportunities are available?
Research is a major component of training. Faculty work closely with residents on publications and projects in the resident's area of interest. Residents receive an annual stipend for research activities and must complete one scholarly project and one QI project before graduation. The program hosts Research Week each September.
What fellowships are available at MountainView?
MountainView Hospital offers Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease, and Addiction Medicine fellowships.
